Why I went to New York City...

Over the past 2 years, my classroom has received donations through the website, www.donorschoose.org, including 8 funded projects and over $14,000 of classroom resources, thanks to the generous donations of friends, family, and companies. My last project, "Making Movies to Save the Environment" (http://goo.gl/xMV1ik) caught the attention of an organizationcalled, Lily Sarah Grace Fund" (www.lilysarahgrace.org), which supports arts and project based learning in schools. They e-mailed me last May and let me know I was a candidate for teacher of the year, so I submitted my resume and a short video about my project: http://youtu.be/-oYy4cveMr0

In August, LSG e-mailed again to let me know I was chosen as “Teacher of the Year” and offered to fly my wife, Alina Tullmann, and I to New York City to attend the annual LSG Gala, where I will be recognized for my art-infused project. We are very excited about flying to New York City on Oct. 23-26. My good friends and colleagues, Kristen Lowry and Jillayne M. Lowe, will also be joining us!

I look at this honor as more than applauding one person, but celebrating a community of learning. Without my Richland School District peers, administration, and district's continued support and encouragement to enrich student's education, this honor could not be achieved.

I would like to thank all of my teachers, mentors, principals, colleagues, coaches, family, and friends, for your role in investing in myself, as well as other learners by inspiring creativity, positivity, and passionate teaching and learning. But above, I thank God, the first Creator and first Teacher, who been faithful through the bad and the good.
