Tuesday, October 20, 2015 was the first Appy Hour: Edcamp Style workshop happened at the Richland School District in Shafter, CA from 3:00pm to 4:00pm! So, what is Appy Hour: Edcamp Style?
We had a total of 20 teachers and the event it was a huge success!
Teachers got a Chromebook, signed in, and went to the training website: bit.ly/edcampstylesite
Edcamp is a participant-driven model of professional development. Teachers get to choose to learn about and discuss the topics they are interested in.
Teachers write on a post-it or digital schedule the topics they are interested in. The topics are organizes into times and places for learning.
The post can be a topic or question. After the schedule is set, teachers go to the room or table designated for the topic they want to learn about.
Instead of 1 expert presenting, teachers of all levels have conversations and take notes during the session.
If a teacher isn't interested in the conversation, they go where they grow!
This model of teacher-choice PD is very powerful because it gives control back to the teacher, it's interest driven, and they come away with learning that meets their specific needs.
After our 30 minute session, teachers were able to debrief on a Padlet, a digital bulletin board, where they could share learning.
Since there were so many teachers at this first session, I had to request help from Angie Martinez, Dennise Bentle, Mattie Jacobs, and Whitney McDermott. If this many teachers show up each time, I'll need to continue to ask for more help!
So, who came and what did they think of Appy Hour: Edcamp Style?
